Multiplication

Playful Mathematical Inquiry with Multiplication in Grades 3 - 6

The ideas below are just ideas. This is NOT meant to be used as a unit. You will need to do some form of a pre-assessment to find out what your students know and then based on this information, combined with the learning standards in the curriculum, you will design learning opportunities to meet the needs of your students and unique context. The ideas below are just meant to inspire.

Real Life Arrays: Quick Image Number Routine

Picture
Using arrangements of items in arrays is a great way to encourage multiplicative thinking. Being a 'mathy' person I really enjoy finding the math in all activities, including baking. I use these images in classes for Number Talks. I project the image using an app called Skitch on my iPad. Skitch is an app that was created by Evernote. It is very easy to use. I upload any image from my camera roll and set it as my background. when I ask a student to tell me how they knew how many in all, I use the marker tool to circle the groups they state. Then I can add text and type in the corresponding equations, should I wish to do so. When you shift to the next student, I click the three dots on the top bar (...) and click "clear all annotations". This will clear your mark-ups but keep the photo. Feel free to pull these photos off to your desktop and save them to your camera roll to use with your students!
